Flying cars are not a new concept. The "Rides both roads and air" vision was put forward in the 1926 "Popular Science" magazine nearly a hundred years ago; using a conventional engine can also drive a propeller aircraft to fly in the city. For example, small helicopters have hundreds of helipads at the top of high-rise buildings in big cities such as Tokyo.

However, conventional power form aircraft have several drawbacks that make it difficult to use widely in cities. First, the noise is huge. The high-speed rotation of a large-diameter propeller driven by a conventional piston or turboshaft engine can cause great noise. I once sat in the ATR-72 regional passenger aircraft in Africa. When taking off, two PW124 turboprop engines will make noise reduction. The earphones are the same, but it is hard to imagine that the city can tolerate the roar of helicopter rotors. Second, the emission standards of exhaust emissions and automobile exhaust emissions must be upgraded from the national five to the national six. For the aircraft operating in the city, the emission control of exhaust pollutants is naturally a problem. Third, economy and maintenance, fuel-driven frequent takeoff and landing, short-distance flight requires a lot of fuel, and the traditional engine structure is complex, with a large number of moving parts, requiring frequent maintenance.

The electric propulsion technology perfectly solves the above problems. First, the motor-driven propeller can be distributed in a distributed layout. The use of a plurality of smaller-sized propellers can significantly reduce noise, and the electric propulsion system itself is extremely quiet, comparable to the operation of an electric vehicle. Second, the battery is used as an energy storage component, and there is no exhaust emission. Third, energy costs have fallen sharply. Foreign companies have shown that for a 10-passenger, 100-mile flight, a traditional aircraft consumes roughly $400 in fuel, while a motor consumes only $12 in electricity; because the motor system is much more structured than a conventional engine. Simple, its maintenance costs will be greatly reduced. With its remarkable advantages of high efficiency, low emission and low noise, electric propulsion technology has brought new opportunities for urban air transport development.
