English version

This morning, Kitty Hawk, founded by Google co-founder Peggy, officially entered into a strategic partnership with Boeing to promote its aerial "taxi" product, cora. This is tantamount to a potent agent for Boeing, whose performance has been frustrated in recent years due to frequent accidents.
Kitty Hawk is a company dedicated to the "electric transport" program, and from its inception to the present, its full energy is almost on the research and production of "flying cars." Its air taxi product, cora, has reached an agreement with Air New Zealand last year for pilot operations. This time, Kitty Hawk chose to cooperate with Boeing, and it should be ready to go to a bigger market.
The era of flying cars seems to be very close.
Maybe you will think that a person driving a car in the sky can only be a bridge in science fiction. Yes, it is very dreamy, but humans have never stopped the frenzy of flying.
As early as 1917, just after the Wright brothers had just invented the aircraft, an American engineer, Cheng Shige Curtis, built a Curtiss Autoplane with a wingspan of 12.2 meters.
Although it seems that it is like "an airplane makes the car look like it", it is actually driven by the car engine, and the car function can be realized on the ground, although the Curtiss Autoplane only realizes the short-distance jump. "Sliding", but also can be called the title of [the originator of flying cars].
Since then, humans have begun to toss a 100-year flight to a flying car.
In 1921, French engineer Rene Donpie designed a flying car called "TampierRoadable", hoping to make a blockbuster at the Paris Air Show that year, but helpless, this big guy is overweight, just flying a few Next, the flight speed is 24km/h, and finally the dingy exit.
In the first 50 years of the 20th century, although human brains were wide open, there were still no flying cars that met commercial standards. There are many reasons. At that time, the automobile industry was just born less than a century ago, and even the cars were not stereotyped. People simply couldn’t take care of what the flying car should look like. Secondly, the materials science and dynamic science at that time were still very weak. The wings of small aircraft could not be folded. The floor space was large and the weight was heavy. It was not only difficult to take off, but also had a great influence on the ground driving of the car form.
Flying cars that truly conform to modern ideas appeared in the 1950s. After the baptism of war, the overall industrial level and creativity of human society has risen to a higher level. There has also been great progress in understanding the aircraft. People are beginning to realize that the wings need to be folded to solve a series of problems faced by flight and land switching.
In 1953, Buick Auto Engineer Liland Brian designed a modern car, the Bryan Autoplane. The flying car is propelled by a propeller mounted on the rear of the car. The biggest feature is that the wing can be folded twice, which is very close to the design of modern flying cars.
Unfortunately, Rand Brian himself died in an air show in 1974. This major security flaw has cast a shadow over the difficult development of flying cars.
In addition to individuals, the exploration of flying cars by big companies has never stopped. In 1980, after learning from the lessons of his predecessors, Boeing designed a seemingly perfect personal flight vehicle, Sky Commuter. The car features an excellent aerodynamic chassis that enables vertical takeoff and landing to minimize the difficulty of take-off and landing.
Not only that, but Boeing is doing its best in the areas that it excels. With a compact structure, it also provides a spacious interior space to the utmost, and the lightweight body is a lightweight solution.
In terms of power, the part of the Sky Commuter is not powered, and its power is provided by the onboard gas turbine engine. However, Sky Commuter still adopts the airplane's driving mode and requires a handle-type remote control, which is not a small improvement in driving difficulty.
For a moment, it seems that the world has seen the door to the future of transportation, but its expensive price has made people discouraged. The investment budget of up to 6 million US dollars was even extremely scratching on Boeing. In that era, this was a huge sum. Finally, the Sky Commuter project was dead. Since then, human exploration of flying cars has entered a low tide.
But as the saying goes: Dreams always have to be, if it is realized?
In the 21st century, the automobile industry has matured. From the perspective of the automobile itself, there have been few key breakthrough technologies. On the other hand, due to the surge in global car ownership, traffic congestion has become a big problem, traffic jams have brought about a reduction in efficiency, which has eliminated the advantages of cars, and people are eager to find new breakthroughs.
The tremendous development of the Internet and computer industry has spawned the artificial intelligence industry. At about the same time, humans have restarted another long-lost technology tree and resumed their yearning for the sky.
The earliest groups that entered this field were small start-ups. Founded in the United States in 2006, Terrafugia has developed a flying car that takes off at a distance of 30 meters and transitions. This car features a classic design of the folding wing to maximize the performance of the car and the aircraft. However, its operation is still designed around the aircraft. The speed of the flying car is controlled by the size of the throttle. The front and rear push-pull steering rods control the pitch of the flying car, and the left and right pressing rods and the rudder of the ankle control the direction of the flying car. Although its founder said that ordinary car drivers can be proficient in 2-5 days. But for ordinary people, driving it commuting is still a big challenge.
Terrafugia was acquired by China Geely in 2017. Geely has already issued a notice that will launch the first market-oriented flying car in the second half of 2019.
Not only small workshops, but also numerous business opportunities have been seen by numerous giants. Traditional vehicle manufacturers like Toyota, Aston Martin and Airbus have joined the battle.
Uber released its "flying car" project Elevate at the end of 2017 and plans to occupy the airspace by 2020. Even Intel, Tencent and other companies that are completely out of reach have also launched their own concept models, ready to take a share.
Today, flying cars are the second hottest in the car-making industry. Although there is no such thing as auto-driving, it is also low-key development.
So, is the flying car ahead of smart driving technology and the first to become a new direction to subvert the way we travel?
This issue is worth discussing.
On the one hand, although flying cars seem to require a larger operating threshold than traditional cars, most manufacturers currently use the "autopilot" mode. This kind of autonomous driving is different from the automatic driving we usually discuss. Compared with cars, it has to deal with "road variables" much less. After all, you don't have to think about pedestrians or takeaway brothers who suddenly cross the road.
Flying cars have not accumulated too many cases in terms of safety. For example, Tesla's head, Musk, is a loyal opponent of a flying car. "I don't want me to walk on the road one day and be killed by a wheel that descends from the sky." Whether the flying car is safe or not is still unfounded. Whether the public can accept this “cool and cool” way of travel will require time verification.
The biggest pressure on flying cars comes from our economic principles. As far as current data is concerned, the cost of flying cars is still very high. On the one hand, flying cars require a fairly high energy density, not only consume a lot of fuel, but also make its cruising range not too high.
On the other hand, if a large number of flying cars are in the sky, it means that our air traffic control rules and urban planning need to be completely changed. In response to the question of when the country can allow flying cars to go to heaven, a US netizen came up with such a document. In 1974, the US Air Traffic Control Administration promised [two years later], and until today, this answer remains Yes [after two years].
Flying cars have experienced a hundred years of development, from the initial ignorance and exploration, to the low tide, and then to the blossoms, humans have never given up on this simple dream. When will you be able to see the spectacular sights of a movie like a metropolis? It seems very close and seems far away, but in any case, it deserves our expectation.

Curtiss Autoplane
